A Bit About Us

Turning Interest Into Action

The object[s] of the Friends of Southend Cemeteries are:
 

·         to preserve, record and educate the local community on the heritage and wildlife of the Sutton Road Cemetery, North Road Burial Ground and Leigh Cemetery in the borough of Southend-on-Sea.
 

·         To offer appropriate heritage, art, educational and community activities within the 3 Southend municipal cemeteries and to provide Volunteering opportunities for residents of the borough of Southend.
 

·         to enhance awareness of the issues within Southend Cemeteries.
 

·         to oppose the damage to or removal of any heritage or wildlife from Southend Cemeteries for commercial gain.
 

·         to work with Southend Borough Council Burial Services Department to improve, to enhance community access to and protect the environment of the Sutton Road, North Road and Leigh cemeteries.
 

·         to secure funding and assess viability, convert the building as appropriate and operate the Dissenters’ Chapel in Sutton Road Cemetery as a community education and heritage centre with the name of the Benjamin Waugh Education and Heritage Centre.
 

·         to work with other organisations with similar aims supporting other sites of burial or heritage.
