Welcome to the
Friends of Southend Cemeteries

About

Friends of Southend Cemeteries (FoSC):
Our aim is to work with the local community and community organisations around Southend-on-Sea to help people to see the wonderful spaces that are our municipal cemeteries as a resource that can be used for appropriate activities such as art, nature, education and heritage and still respect the memories of those interred there over the last 170 years.

With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the FoSC has been able to appoint some wonderful Trustees and fully constitute the organisation to apply for full charitable status.

Activities

Friends of Southend Cemeteries is in the business of changing attitudes and improving knowledge of the heritage of our town through providing activities in and around our 3 municipal cemeteries - Sutton Road, North Road and Leigh-on-Sea. The work we do at our Non-Profit Organisation is aimed at providing a friendly and respectful approach to working with children and adults of all abilities to bring what many have considered wasted space back into community use by creating opportunities for individuals and communities.

Sutton Road Cemetery was opened in the 1850s and has been the main burial site for the town over the last 170 years. There are approximately 100,000 people buried at Sutton Road that represents a vast heritage resource for us all.

The Leigh Cemetery has served the parish of Leigh-on-Sea since Victorian times when it sat on the Turnpike of the London Road and Eastwood Road as the guardian of some of the great and the good of Leigh-on-Sea.

The North Road Burial Ground has served the parish of Prittlewell since little Annie Smith was buried in 1881. Since that time approximately 8045 souls have been laid to rest within the bounds of the Prittlewell Chapel that stands at it heart.
